Every day is a miracle waiting to happen, every rainbow a promise, and every smile, a sparkle of life.
I always knew that there was a plan for me, I just wasn’t sure what it was. I do know it started when I became the sales manager for a boutique jewelry company in NYC. But after four years in sales, I decided to move back home to South Florida. Much as I loved my job and my life in the Big Apple, I felt there was something missing; something else I was meant to do. So I prayed for guidance, confident that I would be pointed in the right direction.
After living at home for awhile, I started thinking about creating a line of fun, feminine sports jewelry for women like myself who were die-hard sports fans. There was only one minor problem: while I loved jewelry, I knew nothing about making jewelry. Still, I had a gut feeling that I might be on to something.
While tailgating at Joe Robbie Stadium, I started talking about the idea to my friend Barbara Flynn, who is also a sports nut and was my boss in NY. She loved the idea, and the more we talked about it over the coming months, the more excited we both became. Finally, we decided to make it happen. Enamel was all the rage then, so it seemed the obvious choice for our medium. One minor snag: neither of us knew how to work with enamel! Once again, I looked above for an answer.
It LITERALLY came the next day when Barb got a brochure in the mail advertising a seminar in enamels and dyes!
Hello!!! Talk about perfect timing!!!
After taking the course, we were off and running! We were making some beautful pieces, but starting a new business is a full time job, and Barb and I were busy with other things. So we kind of lost focus on the jewelry for awhile.
Then life intruded big time.
In 1999, my 11 year old niece, Rosie, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted her desire to come to Disney World in Florida which gave me an opportunity to get to know this amazing little girl in a way I never had before. Despite the poor prognosis, Rosie was a fighter and always cheerful. She had no hair or eyebrows, but she had a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her lips that were utterly infectious. When she walked into a room, she simply glowed.
She touched everyone around her in ways none of us will ever forget. I know the time I got to spend with Rosie was both an inspiration and a gift, because after she passed in June of 2003, I stopped making excuses and my passion for designing jewelry came flooding back.
Suddenly, I was smiling again. A sparkle had come into my life, and I knew beyond a doubt that this little angel was looking down, coaxing me to find my heart again.
I called Barb and she came back on board immediately. Soon we were pumping all our energy into the jewelry company. We decided to expand the line beyond sports and introduce dazzling new designs featuring Swarovski crystals, semi precious stones, antique beads and precious metals.
In Rosie’s memory, we also decided to donate a percentage of all sales to charity.
Each of my exclusive pieces is hand made. Each collection is an expression of my faith and love. I'm excited to share it with you. I think it will put a sparkle into your life. It did in mine!
Lovingly yours,
Dawn De Marco Book
